El Jadida enjoys a mild Atlantic climate year-round. Summer (June to September) is warmest and ideal for beach visits. Spring and autumn offer comfortable temperatures for exploring the Portuguese fortifications and medina. Even winter is mild compared to inland cities.
El Jadida was a Portuguese trading post from 1502 to 1769, known as Mazagan. The fortified city they built, including the extraordinary underground cistern, the Church of the Assumption, and the star-shaped ramparts, survives beautifully and is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Portuguese Cistern is the undisputed highlight, a hauntingly beautiful underground chamber with columns reflected in shallow water. The ramparts offer panoramic views over the ocean and the old city. Sidi Bouzid Beach, just south of the city, provides a lovely setting for a seaside lunch.
